The Carneddau from Ogwen

Photo from Pen yr Helgi Du

This is a great high level ridge walk for the mountain walker, over barren mountains with some exciting scrambling in places and a visit to the second highest mountain in Wales (Carnedd Llewelyn).  It should not be attempted in bad weather by the inexperienced as this is a serious mountain expedition.  The distance is only 10 miles with quite a lot of ascent and descent involved, but you can do it!  If you do it will be well worth the toil because this is one of the Classic walks of Wales.
The start is on the A5 at Glan Dena between Capel Curig and Bethesda, there is plenty of parking along the roadside but try to get there early.  The first objective is Pen yr Ole Wen, to reach its summit a little scrambling is needed but nothing too difficult and the path is well worn so you shouldn't have any problems finding your way to the Summit (979m/3211ft). From here there are good views of Y Garn and Tryfan to the south. Looking north are next summit Carnedd Dafydd looms ahead with a height of (1044m/3423ft). It is no small mountain, in fact it is the second highest of the day and only 62 ft less than Carnedd Llewelyn.  Looking northeast the main summit of the day Carnedd Llewelyn Height (1064m/3485ft) invites you for lunch. Here is a great place to take in all around you with fine views in all directions (if the weather is clear that is).
The descent is no less thrilling, but care should be taken on the short scramble down to Bwlch Eryl Farchog.  With a scramble up to the summit of Pen yr Helgi Du (833m/2733ft) we complete all the five summits and begin are descent back down to the A5 and back to the start.  You will need a Map and Compass for this walk and I have reccomended an excellent Guidebook.  I hope you enjoy this excellent trek as much as I did, but take care on the scrambles.

The Snowdon Horseshoe.

Photo of Snowdon from Crib GochHere is a great walk for the adventurous among you especially those that enjoy a scamble.  However "great care" must be taken, as this is a serious mountain scramble with a few hairy moments including the knife-edge ridge of Crib Goch and the steep nose on Crib y Ddysgl.
The walk starts from the car park at Pen y Pass.  The car park soon fills up so you need to arrive very early.  When this is full you can park opposite the Pen y Gwryd Hotel and walk up to Pen y Pass (about 20 mins).
The route follows in an anti-clockwise direction over the sharp ridge of Crib Goch which may pose a few problems for anyone with no experience in mountain scrambling.  If you are unsure, there is an alternative route via the Miners track (pig track).  After Crib Goch the route climbs to the summit of Crib y Ddysgl, then circling the rim of the Glaslyn cwm passing the 3m high marker stone at the "zig zags" exit of the Pig Track.  Following the Snowdon railway track, you will soon reach the summit of Snowdon.  (The highest mountain summit in Wales).
The return is over the summit of Llewydd, then descending down to the shore of Llyn Llydaw and on to the junction with the Miners Track.  From here make your way back to Pen y Pass to finish a great day out on the mountain.
On a clear day this walk provides some fantastic views and more than its share of excitement.  No wonder it is one of the most popular walks in Wales.  Have a great day!!!
